The MERIT Scholarships provide financial aid to the children, spouses, and dependents of U.S. Armed Forces or state-organized militia members who were New York State residents during their service.

Eligibility includes those who:

  • Died, became severely and permanently disabled, or are missing in action due to an injury or illness sustained while performing military duties—whether in combat or not.
  • Were determined by a licensed medical doctor or osteopath to be permanently disabled and unable to work due to physical or mental impairments.
  • Are veterans who, while New York State residents, became severely and permanently disabled during military service and can no longer engage in paid employment
