The Scholarships for Military Children Program was created to recognize the contributions of military families and celebrate the role of commissaries in the military community.

Program Details:

  • Scholarships are funded through contributions and awarded annually at each commissary operated by the Defense Commissary Agency worldwide.

  • A total of 500 scholarships will be awarded each year.

  • At least one scholarship will be awarded at every commissary location where qualified applications are received.

  • Additional scholarships will be allocated on a prorated basis, with commissaries with more applicants having more recipients.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid U.S. Uniformed Services Identification and Privilege Card (DD Form 1173).

  • Parent(s) must be serving or retired from:

    • Army

    • Marine Corps

    • Navy

    • Air Force

    • Coast Guard

  • Must be enrolled or planning to enroll in:

    • A full-time undergraduate program leading to a bachelor’s degree, or

    • A community or junior college program that allows for direct transfer into a four-year program.

Academic Requirements:

  • High school applicants: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

  • College applicants: Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

  • College freshmen must submit a first-semester transcript.

Application Process:

  • Students must complete the application themselves and confirm their responsibility when submitting it.

  • Essay: Write a short 500-word essay (topic announced when the scholarship opens).

  • Transcripts:

    • High school applicants must submit a transcript showing a GPA of 3.0 or above.

    • College applicants must submit a transcript showing a GPA of 2.5 or above.

  • Eligibility Validation: Must enter the benefits number found on the reverse of the DD Form 1173 card.

  • Important Note: If students qualify for an ID card but do not have one, they should visit a military personnel office to obtain one with the appropriate documentation.
