SGM Larry L. Strickland dedicated 30 years of his life to serving in the Army. At the time of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, he was serving as the sergeant major to the Army’s deputy chief of staff for personnel, tragically losing his life in the attack.
In his honor, an award is given annually to two noncommissioned officers who best embody the Army’s vision, inspire others, and contribute to shaping future leaders while demonstrating exceptional stewardship of soldiers.
Each award recipient is honored with a bronze eagle and $4,000 to assist with educational expenses not covered by tuition assistance, such as instructional fees, lab fees, and books. The award is presented each year at the Sergeant Major of the Army Noncommissioned Officer and Soldier Forum during AUSA’s Annual Meeting. AUSA Membership is not required.
